Viktor Ullmann
Viktor Ullmann (1898-1944) was a composer of German-Jewish heritage who
spent his life in the Czech and German cultural spheres. He studied
composition with Arnold Schoenberg and developed an interesting style
that brings together influences from the Second Viennese School,
Hindemith, and satirical cabaret, among others. Under the tutelage of
Alexander Zemlinsky, Ullmann became an accomplished conductor with what
is now the Prague State Opera (he was among the first to conduct Ernst
Krenek’s opera Jonny Spielt auf). He was also a music critic and at one time managed a bookstore dedicated to the philosophy of anthroposophy.
